The VPX chassis is the structure that houses all the system components. It is designed to withstand the rigorous demands of the military and aeronautical sector, guaranteeing the protection of internal components in the most adverse conditions.

The VPX backplane is the heart of the system, providing the electrical connections between the different components. With its modular design, it allows great flexibility and scalability, facilitating the integration of new technologies and standards.

VPX: 3U and 6U formats

We offer a wide range of VPX cards with CPU, GPU, PMC, XMC, in 3U and 6U formats. These include Intel, ARM and PowerPC processors, with exceptional performance and the highest possible energy efficiency.

Specially designed for the military and aeronautical sector, they can be selected in COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf), modified COTS or custom developments, depending on the specific needs of the project.

In addition, they have different heat dissipation systems, guaranteeing optimal performance even in the most demanding conditions.

VITA Standards and MOSA and SOSA architectures

Our VPX technology meets VITA standards, ensuring interoperability and compatibility with other systems. In addition, our solutions are designed following MOSA (Modular Open Systems Approach) architectures, which facilitates the integration and updating of systems and we also have solutions with SOSA (Sensor Open Systems Architecture) approach, the open standard for sensors and defense subsystems.

VPX REDI

The Ruggedized Enhanced Design Implementation (REDI) laid out in VITA 48 describes how to implement layout techniques to better support cooling methodologies on specific board form factors.

Currently, it covers enhanced forced-air cooling (using baffles and plenums), advanced conduction cooling (using larger and more efficient thermal interfaces), and liquid cooling. It also addresses the use of ESD covers on both sides of the board, a necessary feature for military two-level maintenance strategies.

OpenVPX

The US Department of Defense and other users are mandating improved implementation of open standards and interoperability. VPX specifications have been focused at the board level, but there is also a need for considering system-level requirements to improve interoperability and reduce customization, testing, cost, and risk.

The OpenVPX Systems Specification defines an architecture framework that manages and constrains module and backplane designs, including defining pin outs, and sets interoperability points within VPX while maintaining full compliance with VPX.

TSN communications are based on data streams set between a Talker and one or more Listeners. Based on the agreed parameters for each stream, it is necessary to configure all the elements of the TSN network to switch the frames based on the selected parameters. This operation is performed by a Centralized Network Configuration (CNC) node.

Relyum has been working in a partnership with a company with more than 14 years of experience on Modeling, Simulation, and automated Configuration of Real-Time Communication Architecture.

As a result, Relyum’s partner has developed the TSN configuration tool, that allows to configure TSN devices, when network topology and communication needs are determined, and guarantees that constraints are met.

The scope of this tool is not only Relyum’s ones but also any other Ethernet (TSN and non-TSN) device connected to the network.

The main functionalities of this tool are:

Define network topology

When defining the network topology, the tool allows to define hardware capabilities and traffic requirements. This can be done through the GUI or by importing an existing description by YANG or CSV.

To simplify this process, Relyum TSN devices’ models are already preloaded in the tool.

Select the TSN mechanisms

Through the GUI, the tool allows the selection of TSN mechanisms supported by the hardware. The TSN mechanisms available in the tool are:

• Time-Synchronization IEEE 802.1AS-2020
• QoS: Traffic Classification IEEE 802.1p
• Credit Based Shaper IEEE 802.1Qav
• Scheduled Traffic IEEE 802.1Qbv
• Frame Preemption IEEE 802.1Qbu
• Per-Stream Filtering and Policing IEEE 802.1Qci
• Frame Replication and Elimination for Reliability 802.1CB
• CONFIGURATION: YANG data models

Generate configuration ready to deploy

TSN Configurator allows to generate the proper configuration to meet the requirements of the use case.

Additionally, the configuration files generated by the tool can be automatically be imported from Relyum devices, which simplifies significantly all the configuration process.

Supported TSN standards in the TSN Switch

Turning to the details, this new switch includes a more powerful UltraScale MPSoC, being able to support the following TSN standards:

• IEEE802.1AS 2020: Time synchronization. Supporting two PTP domains
• IEEE 802.1Qbv: Time-Aware Scheduler
• IEEE 802.1Qav: Credit Based Shaper
• IEEE 802.1CB: Frame Replication and Elimination
• IEEE 802.1Qci: Per Stream Filtering and Policiing
• IEEE 802.1Qbu & IEEE 802.3br: Frame Preemtion
• IEEE 802.1Qcc, among others

When it comes to security, the device supports IEEE 802.1X. This standard is an IEEE Standard for port-based Network Access Control. It is used for access control, DoS attack prevention, and port mirroring for diagnosis.

It can be centrally configured from RELYUM’s TSN Configurator, a new TSN configuration tool to be released together with the new HW platform, or from any other third-party configuration system that is compliant with IEEE 802.1Qcc standard and implements YANG modeled configuration files over Netconf communication.

Ruggedized design

The RELY-TSN-BRIDGE+ has a robust and ruggedized design, that includes extended range components and thermal & dissipation artifacts, to guarantee that it can be installed in the most demanding environments.
